Intellectual Property

This section provides a series of links and information about the basics of intellectual property, specifically tailored for cultural resource management issues. Intellectual property is defined by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) as “creations of the mind, such as inventions; literary and artistic works; designs; and symbols, names and images used in commerce.” Knowing the basics of intellectual property is important in Indigenous cultural resource management because the laws and regulations of intellectual property guide how communities will be able to access, protect, control, and disseminate their cultural assets.
