Does labeling change anything legally?

The TK Labels are not legally binding. They do not change already existing copyright rights. They do not change the legal ownership of a collection or digital item. When added however, the TK Labels re-position legal ownership alongside already existing cultural protocols for access and use. As a result the TK Labels create new norms that recognize the existence and the legitimacy of cultural protocols in regards to the management, access and control of valuable cultural resources, especially those in the public domain. They are a social and an educative tool that adds more nuance and specificity in how Native, First Nations, Aboriginal and Indigenous peoples’ digital cultural heritage is used and circulated.  As a result they promote culturally appropriate and respectful sharing that follows already existing cultural protocols.
