Guidelines for Ethical Research in Australian Indigenous Studies (GERAIS) (Australia)

This protocol was developed by the Australian Institute for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) in the form of guidelines to ensure that research with Indigenous Australians is meaningful and reciprocal. The protocol consists of 14 principles of engagement beginning with rights, respect and recognition. The protocol was developed in 2000 and updated in 2012 to address a range of emerging issues including rights associated with traditional knowledge, traditional cultural expressions and intellectual property. The AIATSIS Research Ethics Committee maintains the guidelines and works with AIATSIS employees, academic researchers, and others working in Indigenous community settings to develop and implement ethical research, engagement and knowledge management practices.
