Samburu Community Protocol (Kenya)

The Samburu Community Protocol was developed by a coalition of Samburu pastoralists who live mainly in Northern Kenya today. The process was facilitated by Natural Justice, an NGO focused on human rights and environmental law.
The protocol seeks to rebuild genetic diversity in indigenous livestock suffering from the introduction of non-indigenous breeds through government-promoted breeding programs. Indigenous livestock are integral to food production and traditional cultural practices of Samburu people. They are also better suited to survive drought conditions (Samburu Pastoralists 2009).
