What is a TK Label?

The TK Labels are informational and/or educational tags or badges. They convey culturally and community specific protocols about access and use of Native, First Nations, Aboriginal and/or Indigenous digital cultural heritage. They help non-Indigenous people better understand and respect different cultural perspectives and concerns about access and use of heritage that derive from the local contexts where this material was made and continues to have meaning. The Labels have been designed to address the problem that many Indigenous peoples, families, clans and communities have lost control over their cultural heritage and cultural material because it was recorded, collected and documented for non-indigenous purposes and resides in locations far removed from the original context. As a result, critical information relating to these materials was lost, forgotten, deliberately obscured or inaccurately recorded. The TK Labels reconnect protocols for access and use with the cultural heritage materials circulating digitally and beyond direct community control.
