What is an ethical guideline?

An ethical guideline helps establish baseline expectations for respectful and responsible research and engagement. Given the history of how Indigenous peoples have been treated, ethical guidelines are about bringing awareness to historical violence embedded in certain kinds of research practices, and to make visible inappropriate and irresponsible behavior that makes for uneven and disrespectful practices. Ethical guidelines aim to open new paths for thinking and rethinking positions of power and the nature of research and different ways of conducting research and collaboration into the future.
