Working with Labels in the Hub
*This page is geared towards Community accounts, which is the only type of account that can customize and apply Labels to any project.
How to customize Labels
Each Traditional Knowledge and Biocultural Label has an icon, title, description, and permanent identifier. Every community can customize the description of the Label and include your own title in addition to the standard title, which is an expression of sovereignty giving the Labels specificity and context.
The Label icons are not to be altered. This is to support international recognition and integrity across various systems and contexts. You can learn more about how the Labels have been designed in the recording of our 2023 Summit in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Customization happens in the Labels page of your community account on the Local Contexts Hub.
Step 1: Select a Label to customize
On the Label page, click on each Label to learn more about it. After selecting a Label that your community would like to use, click the “Customize Label” button.
Step 2: Customize the Label
Next, you can choose to customize the title and text for this Label, and to include multiple languages.
The Label title is a few words summarizing the focus of the Label. In addition to the standardized title in English, Spanish, French, or Te Reo Māori, you may add a title for the Label in your local language.
The Label text is a description of what this Label means to your community. Your community can use the provided Label template text (currently available on the Hub in English, Spanish, French, and Te Reo Māori), or customize it to suit your specific community needs and expectations. The Label text should be broad enough that it could be used on multiple projects or varying circumstances.
You may also wish to write your Label in multiple languages, which you can do with the “Add Translation” button.
Click the “Save Label” button. The Label will then be reviewed by another member in your community account for approval before use.
Step 3: Review the Label
Labels must be reviewed for approval or revision by another member of your community account. This process is meant to support collaborative decision-making that reflects your community collectively.
Labels you can review will be designated as “Review for approval.”
If you select a Label to review, selecting “Yes,” will approve the Label so it can be applied to Projects. If you would like to request changes to or deny approval for this Label, select “No.” You can add a note for the Label creator to request changes or give a reason for not approving the Label.
How to edit an approved Label
Approved Labels can always be edited. View the Label and click “Propose an edit.” Your proposed edit will need to be approved by another member of your community account.
When your edit is approved, the Label text will be updated across the Hub, including on projects. Any Projects which are displayed outside of the Hub using the API connection will also be updated to reflect the edits.
How to apply customized Labels to Projects
A community can apply their approved Labels through their account in the Hub, on the Projects page. Projects describe where a Label is being applied, such as a website, a dataset, a museum exhibition, an archival record, or an item in a collection.
Customized Labels can be applied to both Projects created by your community and Projects sent to your community by other accounts on the platform, such as an institution conducting research within your Homelands or areas of interest.
To learn how to apply your Labels to Projects, see “Responding to Projects”.
How to download customized Labels
Community accounts can download the Labels they have customized. On the Labels page, you can download or view as a PDF.
If you choose to download, this will download a zip file containing:
- A readme TXT file that lists the contents of the zip
- The SVG and PNG versions of each Label icon
- A TXT file of each Label description
- A PDF with the Labels and their descriptions
If you choose to view in PDF, this will open a new window with a PDF listing all of your Labels. We encourage anyone applying Labels to carefully review our usage guide, to ensure compliance with our display requirements.
