Local Contexts is excited to welcome Aotearoa Genomic Data Repository (AGDR) as a certified Integration Partner on the Local Contexts Hub.
“We are thrilled to welcome AGDR as our second certified Integration Partner,” said Local Contexts Executive Director Hop Hopkins. “AGDR’s framework and commitment to Māori data sovereignty are well aligned with Local Contexts’ mission and vision. This integration upholds Indigenous Data Sovereignty and Indigenous rights in genomics data in Aotearoa New Zealand.”
AGDR is an Aotearoa New Zealand-based resource that enables researchers and Māori communities to fulfil their obligations relating to the guardianship, management, sharing, and use of genomic data from biological samples that are taonga (precious or treasured).
The AGDR has been developed in alignment with the globally-relevant CARE Principles and FAIR Principles, ensuring data is findable, interoperable, and re-usable in cases where there is prior and informed consent, and access requests are assessed by kaitiaki (Māori guardians) of that dataset. More information about the design and operating principles of the AGDR repository can be found in this publication.
“Tānenuiārangi o Manawatū is pleased to see that AGDR is joining as an Integration Partner with Local Contexts,” said Wayne Blissett, Executive Director, Tuia Te Oranga, Tānenuiārangi o Manawatū. “As an active kaitiaki with the AGDR and partner with Local Contexts, the commitment to the Local Contexts Labels provides another degree of integrity and authenticity to Indigenous data governance — enabling us as kaitiaki to further exercise wise stewardship of our precious resources in partnership.”
The AGDR was jointly developed by Genomics Aotearoa and the New Zealand eScience Infrastructure (NeSI), with funding from the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment. Its design is based on the principles of Māori data sovereignty, enabling kaitiaki authority over who can access genomic data and for what purposes, with the data hosted within Aotearoa New Zealand by National Research Infrastructure provider, REANNZ.
“Local Contexts is an important initiative that many of the groups we are working with are already using or interested in learning more,” said Co-Director of Genomics Aotearoa and AGDR lead Professor Mik Black. “By facilitating the display of Labels and Notices alongside data we are storing we avoid duplication and are able to link directly to the provenance information held by Local Contexts. In making Labels and Notices visible, we hope other research groups explore the potential of this mechanism to assist in their work.”
Integration Partners are organizations that integrate the Labels and Notices into a Digital Asset Management System (DAMS), Collection Management System (CMS), database, aggregator, or other system to facilitate their use by their customers, clients, and contributors. Integration Partners complete a certification process to ensure their connection meets requirements that uphold the veracity of the Local Contexts system.
Visit AGDR’s documentation page for more information on how to utilize this connection.
