Local Contexts fue fundada por Jane Anderson y Kim Christen en 2010. Los objetivos principales de Local Contexts son mejorar y legitimar la toma de decisiones localizada y los marcos de gobernanza indígena para determinar la propiedad, el acceso y las condiciones culturalmente apropiadas para compartir colecciones históricas, contemporáneas y futuras de patrimonio cultural y datos indígenas. Local Contexts se enfoca en aumentar la participación indígena en la gobernanza de datos mediante la integración de valores indígenas en los sistemas de datos. Local Contexts ofrece estrategias digitales para comunidades indígenas, instituciones culturales e investigadores a través de las Etiquetas y Avisos de Conocimiento Tradicional (CT) y Biocultural (BC). Juntas, funcionan como un mecanismo práctico para avanzar en las aspiraciones de la soberanía de datos indígenas y la innovación indígena.
