2025 National Council on Public History Annual Meeting

On March 26, Local Contexts, in partnership with UMass Amherst and the Center for Braiding Indigenous Knowledges and Science staff, will present the workshop, “What is Indigenous Data Sovereignty and Why Does it Matter for Public Historians?”, at the 2025 National Council on Public History (NCPH) Annual Meeting in Montréal, Québec, Canada.

This workshop introduces participants to Indigenous Data Sovereignty (IDSov) as it applies to collections and records. It provides a grounding in theoretical and legislative frameworks, an introduction to the Local Contexts Traditional Knowledge Labels and Notices, and an overview of the Local Contexts Hub. Participants will engage in collaborative discussions to develop actionable steps for implementing IDSov policies and building relationships with Indigenous Nations.

Facilitators:

  • Corrie Roe, Local Contexts
  • Brandon Castle, University of Massachusetts Amherst W.E.B. Du Bois Library
  • Niki Hunt, University of Massachusetts Amherst, Center for Braiding Indigenous Knowledges and Science
