Europe & UK Network meeting

The next Local Contexts Europe and UK Network meeting will be held May 28.

In this meeting, we are very excited to welcome David Chagné who will be presenting on his work with Local Contexts in Aotearoa. David will be giving examples of benefit sharing, including the use of the Biocultural Labels for restoring a critically threatened tree species in partnership with a Māori community. Over the course of his career, David has focussed on the application of genomics to elucidate the genetic control of important characteristics in plants. This research has lead to the development of tools to accelerate the breeding of new fruit tree varieties and has informed the conservation of native species in New Zealand. In partnerships with Māori communities, David has studied the genomes of native species, which has strengthened the connection between Māori and their taonga (treasure), enabling them to exercise guardianship of these resources, while also realising their commercial potential.

Current and invited members of the Network should have an email and calendar invite with connection details. If you are interested in the group, you can read more and submit your interest on our Working Groups and Networks page.

The Local Contexts Europe and UK Network brings together Indigenous community members and citizens, institution and organization staff, and others located in or with connections to the region to see how we can together support the momentum and interest for the use of the Local Contexts Labels and Notices.
