Labels and Notices in Publications

Local Contexts Labels and Notices have been used across digital and print publications, including journals, articles, research papers, thesis research, university publishing outputs, and more. 

When a community adds their Labels to a publication, they are asserting specific provenance information, protocols, and permissions for access, use, and circulation; when an institution or researcher adds Notices, they are acknowledging that there is Indigenous knowledge, belongings, and/or data that may be referenced in the work. Both of these measures play an important role in supporting Indigenous Data Sovereignty and cultural authority in the research and publishing fields.

Implementation in Publications

There are three options for implementing Labels or Notices in a publication:

  1. Using the Hub API, which provides a live connection to a Project on the Hub
  2. Embedding Hub Projects, which provides a live connection to a Project on the Hub
  3. Downloading Project information, which supports static implementation of Labels or Notices

Using the Hub API or Project embedding allows for automatic updates to reflect any changes made to Projects or applied Labels, and could be a good fit for dynamic digital publications. Downloading Project information is a manual, static option, and may be a better fit for print publications.
