Notices in use: Wise Ancestors

We’re thrilled to announce that Wise Ancestors has joined the Local Contexts Hub and is using the Open to Collaborate Notice on their homepage to promote responsible partnerships. Wise Ancestors is a nonprofit aiming to “protect biodiversity in collaboration with Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities,” through a collaborative platform.

Ann Pace, Executive Director, shared: “The system of Labels and Notices developed by Local Contexts is a key piece of the value we integrate into biodiversity conservation projects in partnership with Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities. The Labels help give agency to communities over species they care about and the data that comes from those species.”

Solenne Correard, Scientific Director from Wise Ancestors shared: “Supporting Indigenous Data Sovereignty is a key principle of our model, and the Local Contexts Labels and Notices are a step in the right direction. We will introduce Local Contexts to each community we engage with, and if the communities want to attach labels to their data, we have a specific and dedicated field for that on the Wise Ancestors platform. Using the existing and robust Local Contexts system to tag the data allows us to spend more time on the engagement, so we are very grateful for the Local Contexts team’s work.”

This week, Wise Ancestors launched its platform, which will crowd-fund and coordinate species specific genomic research and upfront benefit-sharing “Conservation Challenges” co-developed with Indigenous Peoples and local communities.
