Omeka has become a certified Integration Partner on the Local Contexts Hub.

“We are ecstatic to have Omeka become a certified Integration Partner, the first for the Local Contexts Hub,” said Local Contexts Executive Director, Hop Hopkins. “Omeka was a participant in the Early Adopters program, and so we are especially thrilled to see them complete the certification process. Building this connection into their platforms allows for greater use of the Local Contexts tools that support Indigenous data sovereignty and cultural authority.”

Omeka is a set of open source web publishing platforms for digital cultural heritage collections. With this certification, a connection to the Local Contexts Hub has been built into Omeka Classic, Omeka.net, and Omeka S.

“Bringing Local Contexts to the Omeka platforms was a natural choice,” said Sharon Leon, Director of Omeka and Chief Operating Officer of Digital Scholar. “We are deeply committed to supporting ethical engagement with cultural heritage materials and that means doing everything we can to help Indigenous communities and collections holding institutions collaborate on making them available to the public in a responsible way.”

Omeka Classic launched in 2008 and is the go-to choice for smaller organizations that want to publish their collections with rich metadata and mobilize them within a flexible exhibition platform that can include maps, timelines, annotation, narrative context, and also collect materials from the public. Omeka.net is the software-as-a-service version of Omeka Classic, which allows users to sign up for an account to use right away. Omeka S launched in 2016 and is ideal for medium to large institutions that want to publish their collection with a full complement of linked data description, and build out sophisticated interpretive content via multiple sites in the same installation.

Visit the platforms’ documentation (Omeka Classic, Omeka.net, Omeka S) for more information on how to use the connection to the Hub.

Integration Partners are organizations that integrate the Labels and Notices into a Digital Asset Management System (DAMS), Collection Management System (CMS), database, aggregator, or other system to facilitate their use by their customers, clients, and contributors. Integration Partners complete a certification process to ensure their connection meets requirements that uphold the veracity of the Local Contexts system.

As other platforms become certified, they will be added to the Integration Partners page on the Local Contexts website. Please contact Local Contexts with any questions or interest to integrate Local Contexts into your platform.
