Workshop 18: Tools for Sharing and Protecting Digital Heritage (currently at capacity)
This hands-on workshop will introduce Local Contexts’ Traditional Knowledge and Biocultural Labels and Notices, providing practical tools for managing digital heritage. Participants will hear how these tools are being used to protect Indigenous intellectual and cultural property and will gain guidance on implementing Labels and Notices within their own organizations. This workshop will be presented by Stephany RunningHawk Johnson (Oglala Lakota), Local Contexts Executive Director; James Eric Francis Sr (Penobscot), Local Contexts Council Chair and Penobscot Nation Historian; Corrie Roe, Director of Outreach & Strategy, Local Contexts; Emily Santhanam (Chickasaw/Choctaw/Tamilian), Local Contexts Outreach Coordinator (Americas).

Session 314: Practical Approaches to Protecting Indigenous Languages
Focused on language preservation, this session will explore strategies for engaging with third-party researchers and platforms, including contracting and negotiating to protect language materials. Participants will discuss ways to safeguard their own community’s language resources. James Eric Francis Sr. (Penobscot), Local Contexts Council Chair and Penobscot Nation Historian, will be presenting as part of this session.

Session 419: Local Contexts—Supporting Indigenous Cultural Authority and Data Sovereignty
This session provides an overview of Local Contexts’ tools, including the Traditional Knowledge and Biocultural Labels and Notices. Community and institutional representatives will share their experiences using these tools to affirm cultural authority and support data sovereignty. This workshop will be presented by Stephany RunningHawk Johnson (Oglala Lakota), Local Contexts Executive Director; James Eric Francis Sr (Penobscot), Local Contexts Council Chair and Penobscot Nation Historian; Corrie Roe, Director of Outreach & Strategy, Local Contexts; Heather Moran, Head of Archives Services, Maine State Archives.

Session 912: Traditional Cultural Expressions and Knowledge in the International Sphere—Updates from Geneva
This session will provide updates on international efforts to protect traditional cultural expressions, focusing on discussions from WIPO’s Intergovernmental Committee. Participants will learn about global strategies for safeguarding Indigenous knowledge in museums, libraries, and archives. Stephany RunningHawk Johnson (Oglala Lakota), Local Contexts Executive Director, will be presenting as part of this session.
