Labels in Use: Sq’éwlets TK Family

Black text on a decorative red background “TK & BC Labels in use. Sq'éwlets Band of the Stó:lō First Nation.” Below are two screenshots from the Sq’éwlets website showing a thumbnail of a video and the TK Family Label as a pop-up. At the bottom in black is the Local Contexts logo, a ring made of dots.

Traditional Knowledge (TK) and Biocultural (BC) Labels are customized by Indigenous communities to give specificity and context, and suit their needs. Label customization is an expression of sovereign decision-making. We’ll be sharing how some communities have customized their Labels with examples that are public or with the community’s permission.

The Sq’éwlets Band of the Stó:lō First Nation utilizes the TK Labels in various contexts throughout their website. Previously, we shared the four TK Labels that have been applied to the entire site. They also utilize other Labels throughout to guide visitors’ appropriate use of the platform and the knowledge shared within specific parts of the site. For example, the TK Family Label has been customized and titled ts’elhxwélmexw and applied to this video of community member, Gwen Point, sharing the story of Mimuxw.
